The Marilyn Monroe 100th Birthday Blogathon: How to Marry a Millionaire (1953)

In the early 1950s, 20th Century Fox, like all the Hollywood studios, began facing massive declines in theatre attendance. The advent of television provided Americans with a cheaper and more convenient form of entertainment at home, where families could watch a wide variety of programmes at little additional cost. Desperate to lure potential moviegoers away from their television sets, studio chiefs began exploiting the two obvious advantages that film enjoyed over the new medium: the size of its images and, at a time when television broadcasting was in black-and-white, the ability to produce photographic colour. The introduction of Kodak's Eastmancolor film stock in 1950 made movie production more affordable and efficient, since it could be used with conventional cameras, unlike the previous and more cumbersome Technicolor system. Within four years, over 50 percent of all Hollywood features were being produced in colour.   LEFT: A typical 1950s American family gathered around a te...

Seasonal Pictorials: Summertime in Old Hollywood

Image
Today is the first day of summer, so I thought I would wish you all a very happy summer with a collection of photographs of classic Hollywood actors and actresses enjoying the sun and the good weather.   Birthday boy Errol Flynn just had a swim. Lana Turner is ready for a day at the pool. Here she is again by the pool at the Coral Casino in Santa Barbara in 1951. I'm not sure that cigarette is very good for you, Lana.   Ava Gardner enjoys the sun in a Spanish beach during a break in the filming of Pandora and the Flying Dutchman (1951). I love her bikini.   Bette Davis celebrates the 4th of July by lighting a firework on the beach (early 1930s). Ginger Rogers at the beach in 1936. I love her shoes! Douglas Fairbanks Jr. enjoys a summer day at his Santa Monica beach house. Debbie Reynolds poses by the pool in her cute swimsuit. Carole Lombard and Gary Cooper are ready to sail (1930). Today, June 1, the Children's Day is observed in many countries around the world, including Portugal, where I live. As such, I thought I would be fun to collect a series of pictures of classic Hollywood actors and actresses when they were children. Here are the ones I could find. Marilyn Monroe at the home of her foster parents, Albert and Ida Bolender (1933). Always the hipster, that Frank Sinatra. Here's another little hipster: James Dean (ca. 1938). Look how cute James Stewart is in his sailor's outfit (1912). How adorable was Judy Garland ? Baby Mickey Rooney (1921). Lauren Bacall outside the Highland Manor private girls' school in New York (photograph taken by her mother, Natalie Perske, circa 1933). Gary Cooper dressed as a cowboy at age 2.   Baby Clark Gable (ca. 1902). Katharine Hepburn used to dress herself in boys' clothes and call herself «Jimmy.» Tyrone Power , a heartbreaker even as a child. Audrey Hepburn in ...
