The Royal Ancestry of Olivia de Havilland and Joan Fontaine

Image
One of Olivia de Havilland 's last screen appearances as an actress was in the television film The Royal Romance of Charles and Diana (1982), in which she played Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother. But did you know that Olivia and, consequently, her younger sister Joan Fontaine were actually distantly related to the Queen Mother, Prince Charles and even Princess Diana? More interestingly, did you know that Olivia and Joan — through their father's side of the family — were direct descendants of King Edward I and, therefore, of his 2nd great-grandfather, William the Conqueror, the first Norman king of England? In fact, their ancestry can be traced back to even before William the Conqueror. For instance, Richard II, Duke of Normandy, William's grandfather, was Joan and Olivia's 28th great-grandfather. In turn, Richard was the great-grandson of Rollo, an early Viking settler who became the first ruler of Normandy in 911.   History and genealogy are of two of the subjects t...

Film Friday: «The Killers» (1946)

In honor of Burt Lancaster's 103th birthday, which was on Wednesday, this week on «Film Friday» I bring you the film that introduced me to the wonderful «Mr. Muscles and Teeth,» which was also the film that introduced him to the world all those years ago. Since this is a film noir, it comes at a perfect time for Noirvember.   Directed by Robert Siodmak, The Killers (1946) begins as two hitmen, Max (Wiliam Conrad) and Al (Charles McGraw), arrive in a small town to kill a man called «the Swede» (Burt Lancaster). His co-worker at a gas station, Nick Adams (Phil Brown), warns him of the danger, but the Swede makes no attempt to flee and the killers shoot him dead in his room. When it is discovered that the Swede had a small life insurance policy, insurance detective Jim Reardon (Edmond O'Brien) is assigned to investigate his murder. Tracking down and interviewing the Swede's associates, including his beneficiary, chambermaid Mary Ellen Doherty (Queenie Smith), and his long...

27 Favourite «Modern» Films

Besides being Burt Lancaster's 103th birthday, November 2, 2016 also marks my 27th birthday. To celebrate the occasion, I thought it would be fun to share 27 of my favourite «modern» films. And by «modern» I mean films that have been released after 1980. Emily of The Flapper Dame has done a similar thing for her own birthday back in August and I, very shamelessly, stole her idea. I hope you don't mind, Emily. Without further ado, here they are. I am not very good at ranking things, so I organized this list in chronological order, by year of release. 1. The Breakfast Club (1985) Directed by John Hughes | With Molly Ringwald (Claire Standish), Judd Nelson (John Bender), Anthony Michael Hall (Brian Johnson), Ally Sheedy (Allison Reynolds) and Emilio Estevez (Andrew Clark) | Universal Pictures | 97 minutes John Bender: Screws fall out all the time, the world is an imperfect place. The Breakfast Club has got to be one of my top five favourite films of all time. In fact, ...
